The architecture of a street level panopticon (Dia Kayyali, 32c3)

Street level surveillance technology, such as surveillance cameras and iris scanners, is now a pervasive part of the daily lives of city dwellers, with disastrous consequences for freedom of expression. This talk will cover what kind of street level technology we’re seeing, how it’s spreading, and who’s making money off of it. We’ll also talk about some of the security flaws hackers have exposed on these technologies, and put out a call to action to CCC.

In a nutshell, technology won't help you in street surveillance. The best response is political:

  • prevent: be aware of the upcoming e.g. municipal decisions regarding surveillance and express your opinion.
  • expose: find vulnerabilities in surveillance systems and make public buzz about it. don't do it alone as media coverage is a great asset.
  • empower: raise awareness among the weak in the society that suffer much from state abuses.
